PH GALLERY + STUDIO seeks photo-based artists to participate in the 4th Annual Juried Group Exhibition, PHOTO21: FUTURE FORWARD.
PHOTO21 engages with artists whose work actively pushes the boundaries of traditional photographic and visual expression thereby forging new ground in the practice of the photographic medium.
The earliest known surviving photograph, noted to have been made in the 1800's by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in Le Gras, Burgundy, France was created using chemical processes. The end result – a one of a kind image beset on pewter. The impetus for Niépce’s desire to capture and fix an image to a surface and the progress of all other photographic pioneers after him have led to the nearly universal modern perception of the photograph as an object; an image fixed to a flat 2-D surface.
With the invention and proliferation of digital imagery, however, photographs - those 2-D objects - are not as commonplace as they used to be. Professional photographers and casual image-makers alike maintain hundreds, if not thousands and tens of thousands, of images in virtual spaces, on memory cards or on their phones.
So the question begs to be asked: What is the future of the photographic object? This exhibition explores this question through the 21st century artists' eyes and mind. Artists who are currently breaking new ground in their photographic practice are strongly encouraged to apply. Your finished work must represent a firm connection to the origins of photography but need not be a representational photographic object per se.
The CALL FOR ARTISTS will open on or around December 1, 2018. All entries will be accepted via SUBMITTABLE.
